Gene trees are leaf-multi-labeled trees where the root is the only internal node that can have degree 2; phylogenetic trees are gene trees without repetition of labels. We provide enumeration and distribution results on gene trees and phylogenetic trees and give a simple min-max theorem on the optimal placement of duplication episodes on a species tree given gene trees that were developed on that species tree.
