Inhomogeneous correlated systems: Heterostructures and trapped atoms

How does a metal penetrate into a quantum-critical Mott insulator? We investigate this question within dynamical mean field theory generalized to treat inhomogeneous systems. We also study the physics of fermionic atoms in an optical lattice where the trapping potential induces inhomogeneities.
