We discuss the interaction of a single ion with an optical field, which is tailored in time and space to achieve a maximum excitation probability. A successfull realization will result in an inversion of spontaneous emission, a perfect transfer of a quantum-optical state to an atom and in two-photon based switching. We will discuss different schemes to obtain that goal and will give a brief description of the experimental realization.
