I am working with stochastic models to investigate recent questions in ecology and consvervation biology.
As it has been shown land use and climate change influence the vegetation pattern in dry savanna, i. e. tree distribution and size. Now, I am working on the impact of vegetation structure on population dynamics of certain species. Therefore first I’m developping individual based models to analyze population dynamics and second I investigate the influence of tree-distribution on it.
At the moment I’m working on the population dynamics of raptors (birds of prey) especially of the Tawny Eagle (Aquila rapax s. str.). Other interesting species on this spatial scale are the Bateleur (Terathopius ecaudatus), the Martial Eagle (Polemaetus bellicosus) and White Backed Vultures (Gyps africanus). Moreover, other species in dry savanna - but on other scales - are scheduled to investigate their population dynamics. These are the Tree rat (Thallomys paedulcus s. l.) and the Sociable Weaver (Philetairus socius).
I use both, a software developed by myself and the program "Exi" (developped by Th. Stefan, UFZ), in order to compare the results and to evaluate the general applicability of the "Exi" program.
