The tutorial aims to give an overview of the recently developed local moment approach (LMA) to a range of quantum impurity and related models; focussing on dynamics and transport properties, and with a primary emphasis on strongly correlated regimes typified by Kondo spin-fluctuation physics. The basic ideas behind the LMA, and practicalities of it, will be discussed. Selected results illustrating the capabilities of the approach will also be given; concentrating here on the metallic Anderson impurity/Kondo model and, within the framework of dynamical mean-field theory, the periodic Anderson lattice.
