Proteins are involved in essentially all the biochemical reactions taking
place in the cell, including those required for the control of gene expression,
metabolism, transport, and enzymatic catalysis. The enormous complexity of the
mechanisms of regulation of protein behaviour in the cell are being unraveled at
an increasing pace. Much advance has been made in our understanding of the way
in which the concentration, localization, and interactions are controlled within
living cells. The introduction of novel experimental high-throughput techniques
and theoretical methods of analysis have enabled the initial study of the
networks of interacting molecules that underlie the functioning of the myriad
biological pathways through which cells maintain homeostasis and promote
development.
We aim at bringing together researchers from the major areas relevant to
understanding protein behavior in the cell, including protein expression,
localization, function, folding, and aggregation. Possible synergies between
experimental, theoretical, computational, and statistical approaches are
anticipated to take place on two main fronts. On the one hand, to improve our
understanding of the physico-chemical basis of protein behavior, and, on the
other hand, to suggest new methods for predicting and controlling it. When
achieved, such synergies will provide an integrated view of the subject, and we
envisage that our workshop will stimulate such an integration.
