Dipolar gases in deep optical lattices

In this talk I will discuss some of our new results on the physics of dipolar gases, and more specifically on dipolar Bose and Fermi gases in deep optical lattices. Contrary to short-range interacting gases, the non-local character of the dipole-dipole interactions leads to relevant (or even dominant) inter-site interactions even without any significant inter-site hopping. I will discuss about these inter-site effects in different contexts including: roton-maxon spectrum, stability and nonlinear physics of dipolar condensates in lattices; dynamical creation of Schödinger cats in mesoscopic ensembles of polar Bose molecules; BEC-BCS-like physics in bilayers of polar Fermi molecules; and strongly-correlated phases of polar molecules in ladder-like lattices.
