Rydberg excitation of cold atoms: From the formation of ultracold plasmas to the dipole blockade regime

Several configurations for the Rydberg excitation of cold atoms will be considered. The properties and a few posible applications of the different observed effects will be discussed for exploring the frontiers of the cold Rydberg atom or molecule field.
