High-quality semiconductor heterostructures became available in the late 1970s and make it possible to implement a wide range of artificial systems in which electronic states and electron dynamics are tailored with great freedom. Artificial lattices, superlattices, were among the first targets of experimental investigations, largely following the pioneering results by L. Esaki and R. Tsu. In this presentation I shall review the investigations on superlattice transport and the experimental efforts to show in periodic heterostructures the signatures and peculiarities of electron dynamics under periodic potentials.
